Gum disease is a serious dental issue that can attack your smile when you have braces. The disease typically occurs when you fail to remove plaque from your smile regularly. It’s best to prevent this disease at all costs so you can maintain a top-notch oral health during your orthodontic journey. To help you do so, our orthodontist, Dr. Shelley Tretter, encourages you to do the following things:

-Focus on properly brushing your teeth: It’s best to brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day. If you can brush after every meal and snack, do it. As you brush, tilt the tool to clean under and around the braces wires and brackets. Make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush.

-Focus on properly flossing your teeth: Although flossing might seem difficult, it’s very important to floss at least once a day. If you can, floss more, like after you brush. To make flossing easier, use flossing tools like a floss threader and waxed floss.

-Visit your dentist every six months: Your routine dental cleaning and exam appointments are vital when preventing gum disease. This is because the treatments provided remove the plaque and tartar from your smile. So, make sure to keep up with these appointments regularly.
