Your orthodontic retainer can help you have the straight and beautiful smile you’ve worked so hard for a lifetime. However, this is only the case if you take good care of your retainer. This means you need to keep it in safe places and clean it regularly. To help you clean it, our orthodontist, Dr. Shelley Tretter, has some instructions for you.

First, please remember to clean your retainer immediately after you remove it from your mouth. This is important because if you wait to clean it, the plaque and other substances can harden on the appliance, making it difficult to remove them. You can clean your retainer by soaking it in denture or retainer cleaner daily. This will help your retainer taste and smell better the next time you put it in your mouth.

Second, if you notice plaque or debris on your retainer, you need to remove them with a soft-bristled toothbrush. You can also use a denture brush or vegetable brush if you would like. As you scrub it, use mild dish soap or water and do not use abrasives, like toothpaste, or the retainer will be scratched.
